The Greater Austin Crime Commission's first Guns4Groceries event received an overwhelming response from the community. The Austin Police Department collected 343 weapons and the Crime Commission distributed $30,000 in Visa gift cards.

Hundreds of people turned out to exchange unwanted guns for gift cards. Guns4Groceries marked the first time in Central Texas that a law enforcement agency took guns off of people's hands and gave them money for groceries, all with no questions asked. The goals of the program are to reduce gun violence in Austin and to help families get rid of unwanted guns. All of the guns collected will be checked to see if they were used in any crimes and then most will be destroyed. The event took place at the Austin Cornerstone Church in June 5, 2010.
