The Latest in Criminal Fashion: Secret Pocket Underwear
The New York City Police Department recently circulated a warning to its officers urging them to be on the lookout for "drug dealers are using underwear with secret pockets...to hold drugs and small weapons."
It seems criminals are resorting to almost any method to avoid the detection of their illegal belongings. Perhaps police departments will have to rethink the traditional light patdowns and have to resort to more thorough methods to find potential stashes.
The NYPD learned about the underwear from a prisoner who was giving them information about local drug dealing and guns. The police were unaware of the underwear with pockets before this, so they made it a point to let everyone know about the possibility. These special underwear are manufactured by multiple companies and have been available since at least 2006.
Although there isn't much that can be done about this "stash wear," police will surely be more aware of out of the ordinary hiding spots.
