Spotlight: DPS Forensic Artist

Suzanne Lowe, a DPS Texas Ranger Evidential artist, is one of only two full-time working forensic artists in Texas. A forensic artist develops composite sketches based on witness descriptions and can create facial sculptures or drawings based on human remains. The ability to recreate facial sculptures from human remains helps Lowe put names to the  hundreds of unidentified bodies in Texas.

Lowe receives requests for her services from over a thousand local, county, state, federal and military agencies. She draws facial features and creates lifelike facial reconstructions from as little as skeletal remains or even a witness's account of the victim. Lowe remakes a victim's likeness from remains, like a skull, which may show ancestry, physical characteristics and even eating habits. "Growth patterns in the cranium can indicate age," according to Lowe, "whereas teeth provide a good source of DNA and serve as a signifying component of the reconstructive process."

Lowe's work has helped solve countless crimes and she continues to be an indispensable contributor to the DPS, as well as the state of Texas.
