75th Anniversary of the Texas DPS Diamond Jubilee Event
The Texas Department of Public Safety celebrates its 75th year in operation with a 13-day motorcycle ride across Texas to visit and celebrate with six agency facilities. The Texas DPS was formed in 1935 when the motor officers of the State Highway Patrol were combined with the Texas Rangers. Although the acutal date of the anniversary is August 10, the riders will depart from the Austin office on July 25, make stops at the Houston, Garland, Lubbock, El Paso, McAllen and San Antonio, and finally culminate with a celebration back at the Austin location on August 6.
The riders will bring a DPS flag with them that is to be flown at each of the regional headquarter's celebrations. The ride will pay tribute to the agency as well as to honor the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The activities at the Aug. 6 celebration in Austin will include a number of displays like a DPS dive boat, canine vehicle, ASTAR helicopter and crime lab mobile unit. The "Children's Zone" will have a "Dunk a Trooper" dunking booth, an obstacle course, "Police" duck pond and many more booths. Other displays will be for Motorcycle Safety, School Bus Safety, Child Passenger Safety Seat Program and the former Texas Rangers Foundation.
Other events during the celebration will include demonstrations of helicopter rappelling and the SWAT teams, as well as showings of the film "DPS: Honoring the Past/Celebrating the Future." A barbecue lunch will also be held and those interested in participating should visit the DPS link below for questions on tickets and other information.
